Trips to Southwest, Omo & Rift Valley Regions




Day1: Addis Ababa– Met by our staff member and transfer to hotel. Balance of the day site seeing in the capital and visit mount Entoto with a commanding view over to the town, church of St Mary, Entoto museum with a collection of royal objects and the grass thatched roof palace of king Menilk the 2nd of Ethiopia. Then back to the city for an extra visit of the National museum, Markato and so on. Over night hotel.
Day2: Addis Ababa- Jimma– Drive or fly southwest of Ethiopia to Jima town crossing the Gibe river valley. Jimma is one of the best places for coffee production in Ethiopia and is under the region of kaffa where coffee was 1st discovered. Over night hotel.
Day3: Jimma-Mizanteferi– after breakfast drive to Mizanteferi through lush and green landscape with stop at Gumaro state Tea plantation located about 640ks from Addis Ababa and is the oldest State tea farm founded in the early 1920. This route is one of the best green regions in Ethiopia where the best quality of coffee is still produced in large quantity. Over night camping.
Day4: Mizan-Kibish– early breakfast then head to the small village of Kibish, which is the main settlement of Surma/ Suri tribes. Over night the way visits one or two villages of Surma people at Tulgit. Over night camping.
Day5: Kinbish– full day in Kibish with day trip to more villages and market days, which are home to Surma people. The Surma people are the most cultured society in south and southwest Ethiopia who have similar culture and tradition with Mursi tribes in Omo valley. Men are known for stick fighting ritual called Donga, a dueling that makes young boys passing from childhood to manhood, while women are noted for a unique practice of lip-plate insertion which is a sign of puberty and personal beauty.
Day6: Kibish-Mizan– today we drive to Mizantefferi with stops at Maji and Tum villages as well as any available market places on the way. Over night hotel.
Day7: Mizanteferi-Jimma- checks out hotel and drive to Jima using the same road we had the first day. On the way visit any coffee farmlands and coffee processing centers. Over night hotel.
Day8: Jimma-Arbaminch– early breakfast and drive Arbaminch town through a magnificent landscape with stops at Gibe river valley and Gibe hydroelectric power dam. Lunch on the way in Sodo town then more drive to Chencha village to visit the Dorze people and their beautiful villages. Over night lodge.
Day9: – Arbaminch-Turmi– after an early check go for boat trip over lake Chamo to view Hippos, crocodiles and some aquatic birds. Head to Konso village for lunch then more drive to Keyafer village for the beautiful Thursday or any other available market days. Over night lodge.
Day10: Turmi- full day in Turmi with a drive to Koricho village to see the Karo people. After noon drive to Omorate village to see the Dassenche people living on the other side of Omo River. Cross the river by wooden boat and approach to their small village with a population of not more than 1000 people. Back to Turmi and late afternoon visit the Hamer village and walk around accompanied by young girls and boys who are singing and playing Evangadi dance going on night evening time when there is wedding ceremony. Over night lodge.
Day11: Turmi- Jinka- late breakfast then precede Jinka town with stop at any available market places. Turmi market on Monday, Dimeka market on Saturday, Alduba market on Tuesday, Keyafer madrket on Thursday and Jinka market on Saturday. Late afternoon visits Ari village that are living all round Jinka town. Over night hotel.
Day12: Jinka-konso– early breakfast then go to Mursi village living in Mago NP. Then back Jinka for lunch and proceed to Konso village with a short stop at Keyafer market falling on every Thursday market. On arrival in Konso, walk through the beautiful villages of the Konso people who are mainly known for terracing work. Over night lodge.
Day13: konso-Yabello– Drive to Yabello to the region of Borena people who are living on both sides of Ethio-Kenya main road. After quick lunch in Yabello, head to Chewbet where we could see mining of salt in marshy saline lake from a crator about 1000 meters deep, singing wheel where the Borena people watering their cattle form a deep waterwheel. Over night lodge.
Day14: Yabello-Awassa- On the way visit Tutu Fella archeological site and coffee farmlands and processing centers. Have lunch in the town of Dilla, the biggest town between Yabello and Awassa. Over night hotel
Day15: Awassa-Addis Abba– Today is out last day. After breakfast go to Awassa fish market then head to Addis Abba through rift valley region with stops at Abijata- shall lakes NP and lake Ziway home to different species of aquatic birds. On arrival in Addis Ababa do shopping and other activities then after farewell dinner at traditional restaurant, transfer to the airport for your flight back home. End of the tour.
